Perdue Foods LLC will recall about 68,244 pounds of ready-to-eat chicken nugget products that may be contaminated with wood, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service said.
The gluten-free Organics Breaded Chicken Breast Nuggets were produced on Oct. 25 and were sold at stores nationwide. They have a UPC bar code of 72745-80656 and the establishment number of P-33944 in the U.S. Agriculture Department inspection mark.
There have been no reports of injury associated with this product, Perdue said.
"After a thorough investigation, we strongly believe this to be an isolated incident, as only a minimal amount of these packages has the potential to contain pieces of wood," said Jeff Shaw, Perdue's vice president for quality assurance, in a statement. "Out of an abundance of caution, we have decided to recall all packages of Perdue Simply Smart Organics Gluten Free Chicken Breast Nuggets produced during the same product run."
The USDA said the problem was discovered when the company received three consumer complaints that wood was found in the product. A complaint was also reported to FSIS' consumer complaint monitoring system.
The USDA voiced concerns that some of the products may be frozen and in consumers' freezers. The agency urged consumers who have purchased these products not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase, the USDA said.
Perdue Foods LLC operates as a subsidiary of Perdue Farms Inc.
