As the week winds down, so does the number of big-name companies slated to report earnings. After a quiet Thursday on the Street, the schedule is considerably light on Friday, with pharmaceutical company
, telecommunications giant
and mobile-phone maker
as the major heavyweights set to report.
Wall Street is expecting Merck to check in with earnings of 71 cents in the first quarter, which would be above the 63 cents earned in the year-ago period. A single analyst polled by
Thomson Financial/First Call
is predicting revenue of $10.9 billion in the quarter. Merck closed down $1, or 1.2%, to $78.30 on the
New York Stock Exchange
Fellow pharmaceutical company
beat Wall Street's expectations by 2 cents on Wednesday as it reported first-quarter profits of 33 cents a share, excluding certain items.
