A new group of companies reports earnings today, which bulls have to be hoping will bring some relief to the market. Among the companies reporting are General Motors (GM) - Get Report, Gateway (GTW) , and KLA-Tencor (KLAC) - Get Report.

Amid yesterday's selloff, General Motors and Gateway finished in negative territory. But chipmaker KLA-Tencor -- which dropped in midday action yesterday -- recovered late in the day to finish up 4%.
