Company Focus: Rowan
Kicking off the earnings season for the contract drillers,
Rowan
(RDC)
reported a wider-than-expected loss. Rowan incurred a net loss of $10 million, or 12 cents a share, on revenues of $100 million, worse than the 21-analyst First Call outlook of a loss of 6 cents, compared to net income of $42.8 million, or 48 cents, on revenues of $183.9 million in the year-ago period.
While Rowan was able to keep its rig rental rates relatively flat year over year compared to the rest of the industry, the utilization rate for its fleet of 22 offshore rigs suffered. On average, just 49% of its offshore rigs worked during the quarter, compared with 59% in the fourth quarter and 98% a year ago. The average rental, or day, rate was $57,300, down 1% from the fourth quarter and down 8% from first quarter 1998.
C. R. Palmer, Rowan's chairman and chief executive, played down the likelihood of a rebound this year. "Looking forward to the balance of the year, we believe that second-quarter rig utilization will be up, but average day rates will be lower. It is possible, but by no means certain, that there will be increases in both utilization and day rates during the latter part of the quarter."
Investors were not pleased. Shares of Rowan slid 15/16, or 12 1/8%, to 7.2. Meanwhile, the
Philadelphia Stock Exchange Oil Service Index
skidded 3.8%.
