Red States Max Out on Stimulus Checks

A new survey of U.S. states and stimulus checks shows a big difference in the impact of those checks, one that's largely dependent on the state where the recipient resides.

The survey, a component of Ownerly’s Stimulus Check Impact Index, uses U.S. Census data to teach us all a lesson on the value of a dollar in every U.S. state.

For instance, the data shows that Mississippian families received the largest stimulus checks in the country, worth on average $2,659 per family, which is 178% of the value of average monthly bills in Mississippi.

On the other side of the coin, Massachusetts families have an average payout of only $1,897 per family which only covers 65% of their average monthly bills.

The data study uses US Census data to determine the average household’s estimated stimulus check amount in each state. It then compares that figure to a family’s typical monthly expenses, including housing, utilities, and mobile phone costs.

According to the survey, this is a different methodology to the data reported by the IRS which looked at average payment values rather than the family-based approach that Ownerly reviewed.

According to the survey, here's a list of states where the stimulus checks stretched the farthest for recipients:

Otherwise, it's helpful to note that the cost of living in a state like Mississippi is much lower than in Massachusetts, and that's true of many red state versus blue state comparisons.

That said, the stimulus check for the average citizen in Oxford, Miss. versus the average citizen of Oxford, Mass. is a real eye-opener - and a real sign of income disparity among U.S. states.
