) -- The New York Yankees clinched a playoff spot and the American League East title on Wednesday to become the third team in Major League Baseball to reach the postseason.

The Yankees won two games on Wednesday against the Tampa Bay Rays in identical 4-2 scores that handed New York its 16th playoff spot in 17 years.

The news came after the conference lost two of its largest football schools in Syracuse and Pittsburgh to the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Rumors continued to swell about the possible move of Connecticut, a Big East school, to the ACC, but East Carolina's announcement that it had applied for membership to the Big East could curb officials' worries to fill the recent football vacancies.

Hall-of-Fame golfer Greg Norman said that Tiger Woods won't win another major in his career.

Norman's comments were expected to be published in the November issue of

Golf Magazine

and highlight the Australian's belief that Woods, a 14-time grand slam champion, had too many distractions to maintain his dominance anymore.

Woods is currently ranked No. 49 in the world and has not won on the PGA Tour since the BMW Championship in September 2009.
