) -- St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa announced on Monday his retirement from baseball after 33 seasons in the major leagues.

La Russa, 67 years old, finished the 2011 season with his Cardinals winning the World Series championship in seven games over the Texas Rangers.

La Russa made the announcement at a Monday morning news conference at Busch Stadium,

according to mlb.com .

The Cardinals skipper won the World Series in 2006 with St. Louis, and led the Oakland A's to a World Series title in 1989.
