NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner died this morning at St. Joseph's Hospital in Florida after suffering a massive heart attack.

Steinbrenner bought the Yankees on January 3, 1973, from CBS for close to $8.8 million. While under his ownership, the Yankees won seven World Series championship titles.

Here, TheStreet has compiled images of the late, great Yankees owner through the years.

This photo of George Steinbrenner was taken in 1981 before game two of the World Series. The Yankees went on to lose the series to the Dodgers in six games and did not make a World Series appearance again until 1996.

Steinbrenner's relationship with manager Billy Martin was perhaps his most notorious -- and most contentious. Martin is seen here with The Boss on June 29, 1978, during his first stint as manager. Steinbrenner switched managers 20 times in the first 23 seasons that he owned the Yankees. He hired and fired Billy Martin five times.

Steinbrenner appointed Joe Torre as the Yankees manager in 1995. Under Torre, the Yankees won four World Series titles.

In 2006, Steinbrenner broke ground on the new Yankee Stadium with New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Governor George Pataki. The construction of the new stadium was completed in 2009, and cost more than $1 billion to build.
