The opening ceremonies of the 2008 summer Olympics got underway Friday in Beijing, as more than 90,000 spectators watched from the National Stadium and billions more tuned in on their televisions.

NBC will carry the ceremonies in the U.S., where they weren't shown live, starting at 7:30 p.m. EDT. Some observers are saying the prelude to the games could be the most-viewed television event ever.
