The Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service issued a recall Thursday on prepackaged raw ground turkey produced by Butterball LLC due to possible Salmonella contamination.

The batch produced on July 7, 2018, about 78,164 pounds of the meat, has been recalled.

FSIS warns people to check their freezers and toss out or return to vendors any Butterball-brand ground turkey with a use-by date of July 28. Look for both 48-ounce and 16-ounce wrapped trays by either of three brands: Food Lion, Kroger (KR) and Butterball Everyday. 

Public health officials have been "investigating a multi-state outbreak of Salmonella Schwarzengrund illnesses involving 5 case patients from 2 states. Wisconsin collected three intact Butterball brand ground turkey samples from a residence where 4 of the case patients live. The case patients and ground turkey Salmonella Schwarzengrund isolates are closely related, genetically," FSIS said on its web site.

The nationwide recall is for:

  • 48-ounce plastic wrapped tray containing Butterball everyday Fresh Ground Turkey with Natural Flavoring (85% lean/15% fat), with sell- or freeze-by date 7/26/18, lot code 8188, and UPC codes 22655-71555 or 22655-71557
  • 48-ounce plastic wrapped tray containing Butterball everyday Fresh Ground Turkey with Natural Flavoring (93% lean/7% fat), with sell- or freeze-by date 7/26/18, lot code 8188 and UPC code 22655-71556
  • 16-ounce plastic wrapped tray containing Butterball everyday Fresh Ground Turkey with Natural Flavoring (85% lean/15% fat), with sell- or freeze-by date 7/26/18, lot code 8188 and UPC code 22655-71546
  • 16-ounce plastic wrapped tray containing Butterball everyday Fresh Ground Turkey with Natural Flavoring (93% lean/7% fat), with sell- or freeze-by date 7/26/18, lot code 8188 and UPC codes 22655-71547 or 22655-71561

Salmonella causes diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever usually within 12 to 72 hours after consumption.
