NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Free donuts are being offered across the country Friday in honor of National Donut Day, instantly attracting the attention of donut aficionados nationwide -- and, well, anyone who likes donuts, which essentially includes all sentient human beings.

Krispy Kreme

(KKD)

is offering customers one free doughnut of any variety at participating U.S. store locations, while

Dunkin' Donuts

will offer every guest one free donut with the purchase of any beverage.

"On National Doughnut Day, Krispy Kreme is encouraging everyone to stop by for a free doughnut," Krispy Kreme corporate chef, Ron Rupocinski said. "While my preferred indulgence is the ... original glazed doughnut, we are inviting our guests to select their favorite doughnut."

Early this month, a dozen finalists in a "Create Dunkin's Next Donut" contest traveled to Dunkin' Donuts University in Braintree, Massachusetts, to compete in a bake-off competition before Dunkin' Donuts' culinary team and company leaders. They were chosen after nearly 90,000 donut creations were submitted online.

On Friday, in honor of National Donut Day, Dunkin' Donuts will be announcing the winner, who will win a $12,000 grand prize and have their winning donut sold in participating Dunkin' Donuts restaurants throughout the country.

National Donut Day was the brainchild of the Salvation Army, which created it in 1938 to to raise funds to help the needy during the Great Depression and commemorate the work of the "doughnut lassies" who served soldiers during the War.
