F/GM: General Motors to Test Selling Cars Online

Let's go crazy!

General Motors

(GM) - Get Report

announced plans to use Prince's hometown, Minneapolis, to launch a program to sell Oldmobiles online, allowing consumers to hand-pick features and a dealer, while receiving a guaranteed price. According to the

Wall Street Journal

, seven locations around the city have been chosen to supply the service. As part of the program, consumers can shop for cars and get a price online. They have to finalize the purchase and pick up the car at one of the dealers.

The pilot program will last 90 days.

This move comes on the heels of recent automaker interest in the Web. Just

last month,

Ford

(F) - Get Report

announced the creation of FordDirect.com, which would offer a similar service through its 4,200 dealers nationwide.
