Los Angeles County’s public health officer announced Thursday that a public health order requiring masks indoors will go into effect Saturday.
"We expect to keep masking requirements in place until we begin to see improvements in our community transmission of COVID-19, said Dr. Muntu Davis. "But waiting for us to be at high community transmission level before making a change would be too late."
A rapid increase in COVID-19 cases led to the reinstatement of the mandate for both unvaccinated and vaccinated individuals.
The nation's largest county has been recording more than 1,000 new cases almost every day for a week.
On Thursday, more than 1,500 cases were reported, marking the highest total of new cases since mid-March, according to county officials.
