California voters have rejected a recall attempt to remove Governor Gavin Newsom from office, according to projections from the Associated Press.
Following the victory, Governor Newsom urged everyone to "get back to work."
"We rejected cynicism and bigotry and chose hope and progress. Thank you, California," he tweeted.
Newsom’s strict pandemic policy has proved to be the main factor behind his victory. Though the same policy was a primary catalyst behind the recall vote.
Currently, California’s coronavirus transmission rates are dropping, according to the CDC. However, as of Wednesday, California’s Los Angeles County leads in confirmed COVID cases among U.S. counties.
A California governor has only been removed from office once in the state’s history. Hollywood's Arnold Schwarzenegger replaced Governor Gray Davis following a recall vote in 2003.
