The Interior Department said today that will establish a new committee focused on reviewing royalty rates attained via oil and gas drilling and coal mining done on federal lands.

The move will aim to ensure that taxpayers receive their full value.

Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke said the new committee will advise him on whether the government is getting a fair price from firms which lease public lands for energy and natural resource expansion.

The committee will effectively displace the process established by former Interior Secretary Sally Jewell to evaluate and overhaul the federal coal leasing program.

"The programmatic review put in place (by Jewell) was costly and unnecessary," Zinke said. "I have established a royalty policy committee to provide advice to me about how we value collections across the board," he said.
