President Donald Trump said in a letter to Congress late Monday that the administration has reached an initial trade agreement on tariff barriers with Japan.
In the letter, Trump said he intends to enter into the agreement in the coming weeks. He also said he plans to enter into an executive agreement with Japan regarding digital trade.
The letter offered no details of what is covered in either of the agreements.
However, Reuters reported that the negotiations have narrowed over the past year and do not include automobiles, which are the main source of the U.S. trade deficit with Japan.
