The discounter announced on Friday that it plans to build and manage its own platform for Target.com by the 2011 holiday season.
Target outsources most of the e-commerce technology and fulfillment services to Amazon, but the deal was set to expire in 2011. Instead of renewing the contract, Target decided to strike out on its own. Amazon will finish out the next two years of the agreement.
The online retailer started as a bookseller and ran sites for other retailers before moving on to selling products on its own site.
