The Wall Street Journal
wasted no time taking advantage of its chief rival's apparent website malfunction, lowering its paywall at 1:12pm EST.
The website of
New York Times
(NYT) - Get Report
flagship newspaper went dark at about 11:30am for reasons that the daily said in a
posting were related to a "server issue" that caused its e-mail and Website to become unavailable.
In an e-mail, New York Times spokeswoman Eileen Murphy said the "outage occurred within seconds of a scheduled maintenance update, which we believe was the cause. We are working on fully restoring access to the site."
In a tweet, Dow Jones said "Bonus lunchtime reading: http://WSJ.com is free to everyone for the next 2 hours." Newspaper wars heat-up in cyberspace.
Unlike in NFL games when a coach will take of his headphones if the opposing coach loses a connection, the Journal showed no such good sportsmanship.
