Washer and dryer manufacturer Whirlpool  (WHR) - Get Whirlpool Corporation Report flied a safeguard petition with the U.S. International Trade Commission on Wednesday in an effort to stop South Korean rivals Samsung  (SSNLF) and LG (LG) from what it says is the evasion of U.S. trade law.

The petition looks to place tariffs on products imported by the two companies, both of whom the company says has a long history skirting trade laws.

"This filing addresses unprecedented behavior by two serial violators of U.S. trade laws," said Whirlpool CEO Jeff M. Fettig. "If not for this unlawful behavior, we believe our washer category would have thrived like the rest of our North American business."
