Whirlpool

(WHR) - Get Report

announced this week that there will be a new round of layoffs at its refrigerator plant in Fort Smith, Ark. -- although the company did not specify the number of jobs that will be eliminated.

Whirlpool said the layoffs will begin in October after the production of counter-depth refrigerators ends.

The workers were warned about the job cuts late last year.

Seasonal layoffs are expected to follow in November when there's generally a slowdown in demand.

Earlier this year, Whirlpool announced it was shutting down a Michigan plant leading to the loss of 216 jobs.

The closure of the Michigan plant is expected to be completed by the end of this year or early next year.

Meanwhile, the production of laundry appliances at the Michigan plant has been transferred to a plant in Ohio.

Whirlpool has about 67,000 employees worldwide.
