named Dave Near as chief operations officer, a new position that will make him responsible for the fast-food chain's U.S., Canadian and international franchised and company-owned stores.
Near, 37, will start his position on May 1 and work at the company's headquarters in Dublin, Ohio. He was president of Wendy's Franchise Advisory Council in 2005 and was re-elected to the position this year.
He and his brother Jason have operated Wendy's restaurants as franchisees in the Austin, Texas, market since 1995. They now have 29 restaurants. Their father, Jim Near, was formerly chairman, CEO and president of Wendy's.
Wendy's also said John Deane, executive vice president of operations, will leave the company at the beginning of next month to pursue other interests.
The changes are the latest to take place at Wendy's. Earlier this year, the company added three seats on its board amid pressure from shareholder activists. Then, last week, Wendy's said its chairman and CEO, Jack Schuessler, was retiring after more than 30 years with the company.
Chief Financial Officer Kerrii Anderson was named interim CEO and president, and board member James Pickett was designated to serve as chairman.
Shares of Wendy's were down 65 cents, or 1.1%, to $61.12.
