, the largest health insurer based on members, reported adjusted net income of $1.77 a share, topping analysts' estimates, as it added 169,000 members in the quarter.
WellPoint said revenue rose 6% to $15.16 billion in the quarter.
Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters expected earnings of $1.68 a share on revenue of $15.12 billion.
Net income in the quarter was $683.2 million, or $1.90 a share, including net investment gains of 13 cents. A year earlier, net income was $739.1 million, or $1.84 a share, including net investment gains of 10 cents.
WellPoint said medical enrollment at Sept. 30 totaled about 34.4 million members, up 2.6% from a year earlier.
The insurer said Wednesday it expects 2011 net income of $7.18 to $7.28 a share, including net investment gains of 28 cents. Analysts are expecting 2011 earnings of $7.07 a share.
