The box office contest is set to be a runaway this weekend.
Walt Disney Co. (DIS) - Get Walt Disney Company Report and Marvel action stunner "Thor: Ragnarok" is tracking to open to more than $100 million in its debut weekend, according to the Hollywood Reporter. That puts it well ahead of the weekend's other opener, "A Bad Moms Christmas" from STXfilms.
"Thor" stars Hollywood heartthrobs Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston and Mark Ruffalo as gods fighting against Hela, the goddess of death, portrayed by Cate Blanchett. It's the third rendition of the popular "Thor" series, coming after monstrous successes from the first Thor film in 2011 and a second in 2013.
"Thor," from acclaimed director Taika Waititi, earned a 97% fresh rating on film review site Rotten Tomatoes. That's the top score any Marvel Cinematic Universe picture has ever received.
The action-packed fantasy is expected to handily beat "A Bad Moms Christmas" in ticket sales. The holiday-themed flick debuted Wednesday, a whole 54 days ahead of Christmas. The female-oriented sequel to 2016's "Bad Moms" stars Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell and Kathryn Hahn as overworked parents tired of the same old Christmas song and dance.
"Bad Moms" is set to tally between $22 million and $25 million in its first five days, which would put it on par with the franchise's first edition. Though the jack-o-lanterns are still out, this will be the only weekend "Bad Moms" gets to itself as a holiday film in theaters. Christmas movie "Daddy's Home 2" opens next weekend.
