Japan's Nikkei 225 Index on Wednesday climbed early but then slid 0.17% to 16,816.34. The broader Topix Index which also had been modestly up at roughly 10:50 a.m. in Tokyo, lost 0.02% shortly after.
Tuesday, the Nikkei rose 1.2%, and the Topix gained 1.8% on a day that saw the yen fall against the U.S. dollar and other major currencies.
In the first half hour of trading, China's Shanghai Composite Index rose 11.572, or 0.41%, to 2,851.75.
Taiwan's Taiex was up 7.24, or 0.10%, to 7,458.30.
South Korea's Kospi Index slid to 1,400.79 or 0.15% in early action, while Singapore's Straits Times Index rose 41.79 to 3,078.31, and Kuala Lumpur's Composite Index gained 2.78%.
