In a deviation from the holiday season plans of its peers, Walmart Stores, Inc. (WMT) - Get Report will increase the hours available to its current employees instead of adding seasonal workers during the upcoming busy holiday season, the company said Wednesday.

Target Corp. (TGT) - Get Report and Macy's Inc. (M) - Get Report announced plans to add thousands of extra workers to help ease the pressure of the busiest time of the year for retailers across the country. Walmart will instead rearrange its roster to fill traditional roles and special holiday roles with employees already on the pay roll.

"These extra hours will help staff traditional roles like cashier and stocker, and newly created technology-empowered positions such as personal shoppers and Pickup associates," Walmart said in a statement.

Walmart will also bring back its "Holiday Helper" position, which staffs associates in roles specifically geared toward helping customers get through the store faster by keeping checkout lines short and opening registers as needed. Walmart implemented the same hiring plan last holiday season and said it received "great feedback" from customers and associates.

Walmart shares traded slightly down 0.12% premarket to $79.95.
