Former and Google executive Suresh Kumar has joined Walmart (WMT) - Get Free Report  as chief technology officer and chief development officer as the big box retailer looks to bolster the digital side of its retail business.

Kumar was most recently employed at Google with the role of vice president and general manager of display, video, app ads and analytics. Before that he was corporate vice president of Microsoft's cloud infrastructure and operations.

Kumar will officially begin his new role on July 8.

"We want to pick up the pace and increase the magnitude of change, so we're creating a new role, reporting directly to me, of Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and Chief Development Officer (CDO), and I'm excited to announce we have found a uniquely qualified leader for this position in Suresh Kumar," Walmart said in a blog post.

Before that, Kumar spent 15 years at Amazon.

Walmart's announcement Tuesday comes about two months after the company sent out an internal memo informing employees that former chief technology officer Jeremy King was leaving the company.

King joined Pinterest after nearly eight years at Walmart.

King's role is still open, and Kumar's position is taking on an elevated role that Walmart has not had before.

Editor's note: Story has been updated to correct Jeremy King's time of departure.
