Wal-Mart (WMT) - Get Report said same-store sales rose 1.8% in September, toward the lower end of the company's own forecast.

The world's largest retailer had predicted year-over-year growth of 1% to 3% at stores open for more than one year.

In a recorded message, a Wal-Mart spokeswoman said the company's sales in September 2005 were tough to beat because they were boosted by preparation for and recovery from Hurricane Katrina.

Wal-Mart plans to release complete September results Thursday, when most other large retailers plan to disclose September sales.

Shares finished Friday down 49 cents at $49.32.
