Wal-Mart Says September Sales Are at High End of Guidance

The company says 100 stores were affected by the hurricane last week.

expected range, but the company said the results are below August's levels.

The world's largest retailer also said 100 stores were affected by the hurricane that hit the East Coast last week.

The company had previously said September same-store sales would be up 3% to 5%. For August, same-stores sales rose 6.9%. Wal-Mart will report sales on Oct. 9 for the five weeks ended Oct. 3.

The strongest categories in the week ended Sept. 19 included food, toys and pet supplies. Stores on the East Coast were the best regional performers, the company said on its weekly recorded sales call.

Shares of Wal-Mart were falling 62 cents, or 1.1%, to $58.14 in Instinet premarket trading.
