Wal-Mart (WMT) - Get Report shares were rising into the market close Tuesday, but the retail sector on the whole was in tatters.

While the Dow and Nasdaq were down 2.8% and 3.3% and the

S&P Retail Index

I:RLX

was down 2.7%, shares of Wal-Mart were up 5% to $48.86 Tuesday on the heels of the retailer's

fourth-quarter earnings

beat.

Other retails did not fare as well:

Talbots plunged 23.3% to $2.14.

Sears fell 3.8% to 37.52.

Target shares fell 0.3% to $29.99.

Costco was falling 0.3% to $42.63.

BJ's Wholesale Club fell 0.6% to 28.57.
