Visa Says Holiday Transactions Rose 11.8% From Last Year

The Christmas excess may be over, but was it ever a splurge while it lasted.

, the nation's largest payment system, reported that overall spending volume on Visa credit cards and check cards, including both offline and online transactions between Nov. 24 and Dec. 25, totaled $91 billion, up 11.8% over last year's total of $81 billion.

The Foster City, Calif., card issuer also said its holiday transaction volume for both online and offline sales topped last year's busiest day by 12.5%. Total volume on the busiest day, Dec. 22, surpassed $3.8 billion. Last year, Visa recorded $3.42 billion in transactions on the busiest day.

Visa said its cardholders spent about $3 billion using the Internet between Nov. 24 and Dec. 25, nearly double last year's total of $1.5 billion. Visa's biggest day for e-commerce transactions was Dec. 12, when the VisaNet system processed more than $129 million in transactions, up sharply from last year's high of $63.5 million on Dec. 17, 1999.
