NEW YORK (

TheStreet

) -- London's Metropolitan Police have revealed that a bomb housed inside a printer cartridge was set to explode off the East Coast of the U.S., according to a

Bloomberg

report.

The bomb, found in a printer cartridge sent from Yemen and discovered on board a plane at a United Kingdom airport, would have detonated over the East Coast at 5:30 a.m. New York time on Oct. 29, police said.

The explosive device was removed from the printer cartridge at around 7:40 a.m. London time, approximately three hours before it was set to go off,

Bloomberg

reported.

As the U.S. heightens its security efforts after the discovery of the printer bomb, Boston University international relations professor and intelligence expert Arthur Hulnick says "screening for cargo coming to the U.S. by air freight makes a great deal of sense, and was supposed to have been instituted before now..."

But banning toner cartridges doesn't make sense, he said.

"Terrorists will just find some other form of device to use as a bomb. The U.S. always seems to be trying to stop the last event after it has already happened."
