Toyota

(TM) - Get Report

is expected to miss its North American production target for February to April by 20%, a report says.

Toyota will make 350,000 vehicles in North America from February to April, 20% below the automaker's original target, reports Japan's business daily newspaper

Nikkei

. The newspaper cited unnamed sources.

Toyota's sales have fallen since the company began its massive recall of automobiles and its reputation began taking a hit. Toyota has recalled about 8.5 million vehicles, more than 6 million of them in the United States, according to the

Associated Press

.

Toyota President Akio Toyoda went before Congress on Wednesday, apologizing several times and saying the automaker would create a

committee on global quality

of which he will head.

A Toyota spokeswoman couldn't confirm the report, saying the automaker hasn't released latest production figures for the region,

AP

reports.

Toyota's U.S. sales fell 16% in January following the vehicle recalls and a suspension of sales and production.
