NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- The annual, initial-quality study of automobiles by J.D Power has is making news -- finding that domestic brands, as a whole, are overtaking import brands in this area for the first time since the study began more than two decades ago.

The J.D Power study also shows that the initial quality of new models and major redesigns continues to improve this year, led by new launches from

As part of the study, J.D. Power, between February and May, surveyed more than 82,000 buyers and lessees of new 2010 model-year vehicles after 90 days of ownership. Results from the study have been shown over the years to be an accurate predictor of long-term vehicle durability by capturing design-related problems, and defects and malfunctions experienced by owners.

10. Cadillac CTS

JD Power Overview:

The Cadillac CTS is a midsize luxury sport sedan with seating for up to five passengers. First introduced in 2003, the CTS is now in its second generation (last updated for the 2008 model year). The basic powertrain is rear-wheel drive, with all-wheel drive optional. Standard models are fitted with 6-cylinder engines, while the range-topping CTS-V features a 556-horsepower V-8 and performance tuning.

9. Lexus GS

JD Power Overview:

The midsize 4-door Lexus GS sedan is offered with 6-cylinder, 8-cylinder, and hybrid powerplants, as well as standard rear-wheel drive; all-wheel drive is optional on non-hybrid models. The hybrid GS 450h model received a minor exterior refresh for 2010.

8. Porsche Panamera

JD Power Overview:

The Porsche Panamera is a midsize 5-door sedan. Introduced as a 2010 model, the Porsche Panamera is the automaker's first sedan after more than 78 years of building sports cars, and more recently SUVs. The three Panamera models are fitted with one of two 4.8-liter V-8 engines and rear- or all-wheel drive. A dual-clutch 7-speed automatic transmission is standard.

7. Honda Accord Crosstour

JD Power Overview:

This new 5-door hatchback from Honda adds available all-wheel drive, a raised suspension and SUV-inspired design cues to a traditional car platform. Highlights include a standard V-6 engine, 51.3 cubic feet of maximum cargo volume, and space for 5 passengers.

6. Volvo C70

JD Power Overview:

The 2010 Volvo C70 is a carryover model from last year, with a redesigned standard wheel for 2010. The New Dynamic package includes 18-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, Xenon Active Bending Headlights (ABL), and a 3-spoke sport steering wheel with aluminum inlays. The New Multimedia package includes a premium Dynaudio sound system and HDD navigation with real-time traffic.

5. Acura TL

JD Power Overview:

The Acura TL is a midsize luxury sedan that first debuted in 1995. Now in its fourth generation, and last updated in 2009, the TL is offered with two different 6-cylinder engines. Standard models offer front-wheel drive and an automatic transmission, while the performance-oriented SH-AWD model is fitted with an all-wheel-drive powertrain and a choice of transmissions.

4. Mercedes-Benz C-Class

JD Power Overview:

Redesigned for 2008, the C-Class is the entry-level sedan offering from Mercedes-Benz. For 2010, all models receive a premium steering wheel, upgraded tire-pressure monitoring and smaller exterior mirrors. There are also minor equipment and package changes, depending on the model.

3. Mercedes-Benz S-Class

JD Power Overview:

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class is a full-size 4-door luxury sedan. In production since 1954, the S-Class is the flagship of the automaker's lineup. Now in its tenth generation, and last updated for the 2007 model year, the model is offered with 8- and 12-cylinder powerplants and rear- or all-wheel drive "4MATIC" (for inclement weather). The top-of-the-range model is the S65 AMG.

2. Porsche 911

JD Power Overview:

There are no fewer than one dozen different 911 models, including coupes, convertibles and open-roof Targa models. But after being significantly revised for 2009, the standard model 911 carries over mostly unchanged. Still, the high-performance GT3 variant is upgraded with a new 3.6-liter engine rated at 435 hp, and received improved suspension, center-lock wheels and new bodywork

Porsche's May 911 Sales:

1. Lexus LS 460

JD Power Overview:

The 2010 Lexus LS is available in gasoline and hybrid variants with rear- or all-wheel drive. Refreshed for 2010, the LS receives revised exterior styling, a new optional Sport package, updates to the navigation and audio systems, and a new driver monitoring system that sounds an alert if the driver falls asleep or becomes distracted.

Now in its fourth generation, the Lexus LS remains the flagship of the automaker's much-expanded premium lineup. Last updated for the 2007 model year, the current LS 460 retains the same powertrain configuration, but adds an all-wheel-drive model as well as a hybrid variant.
