) -- "The Hurt Locker," the drama about the Iraq war, won the best picture award and five other Oscars including best director for Kathryn Bigelow.

Bigelow is the first woman in the 82-year history of the Oscars to earn the top prize for filmmakers, according to the

Associated Press

.

"The Hurt Locker" came out ahead of sci-fi movie "Avatar," which was directed by Bigelow's ex-husband James Cameron.

At the Academy Awards show Sunday night, Sandra Bullock won best actress for "The Blind Side"; Jeff Bridges won the best actor award for "Crazy Heart"; Mo'Nique as supporting actress for "Precious"; and Christoph Waltz as supporting actor for "Inglourious Basterds."
