NEW YORK (MainStreet) --There's nothing like the thrill of trick-or-treating when you're a kid, but for the adults who answer the doorbell, those bowls of candy can make a dent in household finances.

To make sure you have enough candy for trick-or-treaters without breaking the bank, we did some calculations based on candy sold at

CVS

(CVS) - Get Report

this week. To run the numbers, we divided the retail price (sales and promotions were not factored in) of each pack by the number of pieces contained per pack. We only considered big-name candy makers, rather than generic brands, and did not include variety packs.

People will cut back this Halloween on trick-or-treat double dippers, but there are plenty of cheap candy options for the homeowner.

Here are the cheapest candy packs you can buy, based on how much each piece of candy will cost you. And if there's any left over, be sure to sneak some for yourself. We promise not to tell.

10. Whoppers

Cost per trick-or-treater:

25 cents

How the calculations were done:

Divided a $2.99 pack by 12 individual snack bags (21g each) per pack.

9. (Tie) PayDay (fun size)

Cost per trick-or-treater:

23 cents

How the calculations were done:

Divided a $3.99 bag by 17 bars (19g each) per bag.

9. (Tie)

Reese's Peanut Butter Cups

Cost per trick-or-treater:

23 cents

How the calculations were done:

Divided a $5.99 bag by 26 Peanut Butter Cups (21g each) per bag.

9. (Tie)

Kit Kat (fun size)

Cost per trick-or-treater:

23 cents

How the calculations were done:

Divided a $4.79 bag by 21 Kit Kat bars (14g each) per bag.

8. (Tie) Baby Ruth

Cost per trick-or-treater:

22 cents

How the calculations were done:

Divided a $3.99 bag by 18 bars (18.5g each) per bag.

8. (Tie) Milky Way (fun size)

Cost per trick-or-treater:

22 cents

How the calculations were done:

Divided a $3.99 bag by 18 bars (17g each) per bag.

7. M&Ms (fun-size bags)

Cost per trick-or-treater:

21 cents

How the calculations were done:

Divided a $7.49 pack by 36 M&M bags (15g each) per pack.

6. (Tie) Skittles (fun-size bags)

Cost per trick-or-treater:

19 cents

How the calculations were done:

Divided a $3.99 pack by 21 Skittles bags (about 15.3g each) per pack.

6. (Tie) 3 Musketeers (fun size)

Cost per trick-or-treater:

19 cents

How the calculations were done:

Divided a $3.99 bag by 21 bars (15g each) per bag.

6. (Tie) Junior Mints (mini boxes)

Cost per trick-or-treater:

19 cents

How the calculations were done:

Divided a $2.99 bag by 16 mini boxes (18g each) per bag.

6. (Tie) Hershey Milk Chocolate Bars

Cost per trick-or-treater:

19 cents

How the calculations were done:

Divided a $3.99 bag by 21 bars (14g each) per bag.

5. Twizzlers (mini bars)

Cost per trick-or-treater:

18 cents

How the calculations were done:

Divided a $3.99 bag by 45 mini bars (14g each) per bag, which came out to 9 cents each. Because the bars are small, we decided it would make sense to give each trick-or-treater two to avoid a retaliatory egging of any house that only gave out one.

4. (Tie) Nestlé Crunch Bars (fun size)

Cost per trick-or-treater:

17 cents

How the calculations were done:

Divided a $3.99 bag by 24 Crunch Bars (12.7g each) per bag.

4. (Tie) Twix (fun size)

Cost per trick-or-treater:

17 cents

How the calculations were done:

Divided a $5.49 bag by 33 bars (10g each) per bag.

3. Tootsie Pops

Cost per trick-or-treater:

16 cents

How the calculations were done:

Divided a $2.79 bag by 17 Tootsie Pops per bag.

Cost per trick-or-treater:

15 cents

How the calculations were done:

Divided a $2.79 bag by 54 Tootsie Rolls (about 6.7g each) per bag, which came out to be about 5 cents each. Because Tootsie Roll Midgees are so small, we decided it would make sense to give each trick-or-treater three, or again risk the wrath of the eggs.

1. (Tie) Milk Duds (mini boxes)

Cost per trick-or-treater:

14 cents

How the calculations were done:

Divided a $2.99 bag by 21 mini boxes (12g each) per bag.

1. (Tie): Dum Dums

Cost per trick-or-treater:

14 cents

How the calculations were done:

Divided a $3.39 bag by 48 Dum Dums per bag, which came out to be 7 cents. Because Dum Dums are small, we decided that it would be fair to give each trick-or-treater two.
