Gas prices are down approximately 25% compared to a year ago, but the popularity of fuel-efficient vehicles is higher than ever, particularly as more auto manufacturers turn their efforts to creating electric vehicles to keep up with Tesla Motors.

Even with gas prices so low, being conscious of the fuel expenditures is never a bad thing, allowing consumers to keep more dollars in their wallets for more important purchases.

TheStreet sorted through the new 2016 fuel economy guide to determine which vehicle is the most fuel efficient for its class. TheStreet excluded all-electric vehicles and vehicles that use diesel for fuel. The list does include hybrid vehicles.

Consumers, of course, will have to weigh the savings on fuel for each vehicle vs. whether their budget can handle the price tag and other expenses related to owning the vehicles.

Note: The EPA estimated annual fuel cost assuming 15,000 miles of travel each year and an average price of $2.23 per gallon for regular unleaded gasoline and $2.66 per gallon for premium unleaded gasoline.

Here's the list and when you're done be sure to check out gas guzzlers with the worst gas mileage for 2016.
