Diarmuid O'Connell, one of Tesla's longest-serving executives, has stepped down from his position as VP of business development.

O'Connell joined Tesla in 2006.

"I've been privileged to be part of a team that sparked a revolution in global electromobility. There is no turning back on the road to a world of electric vehicles and sustainable energy generation and use," O'Connell said in a statement to Bloomberg.

O'Connell's departure comes as the electric vehicle maker begins to ramp up production of its Model 3 sedan.
