The latest report may indicate that Tesla will begin its entrance into the commercial freight market by taking aim at regional hauls.
Last month, Tesla CEO Elon Musk pledged to release a prototype of the truck in an effort to expand the electric automaker's fleet beyond just luxury cars.
Scott Perry, the chief technology officer, and chief procurement officer Ryder System Inc (RS) - Get Report told Reuters that the prototype would be able to complete the low end of what transportation experts consider to be "long-haul" trucking.
After meeting with Tesla earlier this year to discuss its trucking strategy, Perry says the electric automaker is focused on an electrical big-rig called a "day cab," fit to travel about 200 to 300 miles with a standard payload before needing to be recharged.
"I'm not going to count them out for having a strategy for longer distances or ranges, but right out of the gate I think that's where they'll start," said Perry.
