Tesla (TSLA) - Get Tesla Inc Report today issued a voluntary recall of its Model S hatchback and Model X crossover over issues with the electric parking brakes that help secure the vehicles when placed in "Park."

The parking brakes have a gear that could break, which would restrict the parking brake from releasing. Consequently, a car that enters "Park" may not be able to move again.

The issue has no relation to the vehicles' regular brakes, and Tesla has received no reports of the parking brake system failing to hold a car in place.

Tesla estimates that between 2% and 5% of the vehicles recalled contain the faulty gear.

The recall is for approximately 53,000 vehicles , about 31,000 of which are located in the U.S. and carry build dates between February and October 2016.
