Shares of

DuPont Photomasks

(DPMI)

were among the best-performing technology stocks Tuesday after the company agreed to be acquired by Japan's

Toppan Printing

.

Toppan will pay DuPont Photomasks shareholders $27 a share in cash, or about $650 million. DuPont Photomasks, formerly a

DuPont

(DD) - Get Report

subsidiary, will eventually be renamed Toppan Photomasks and will keep its headquarters in Round Rock, Texas. The $27-a-share offer represents a 47.7% premium to Monday's closing price of $18.28. The deal is expected to close in early 2005. Shares of DuPont Photomasks traded up $8.06, or 44.1%, to $26.34.

Netflix

(NFLX) - Get Report

rose 4.6% after the company raised its third-quarter earnings estimate. The online DVD rental company now expects pro forma income to be as high as $21 million, up significantly from its earlier forecast of $10.2 million to $13.7 million. Netflix said that lower-than-expected movie rentals during the quarter led to strong gross margins. Netflix will release its third-quarter earnings results on Oct. 14. Analysts polled by Thomson First Call are expecting income of $11.3 million, or 19 cents a share, on sales of $142.4 million. Shares traded up 80 cents to $18.05.

Shares of

Secure Computing

(SCUR)

rose 16.5% after the company issued third-quarter earnings and sales guidance above expectations. The software company expects earnings of 10 cents a share on sales of $24.3 million to $24.5 million. Previously, the company forecast earnings of 8 cents a share on sales of $23 million. Analysts had been expecting earnings of 8 cents a share on sales of $23.1 million. Shares traded up $1.30 to $9.20.

Vignette

(VIGN)

fell 15.3% after the company warned that third-quarter earnings and sales results would fall below expectations. Excluding items, the software maker expects to post a loss of 2 cents a share on sales of $42 million to $42.5 million. Analysts had been expecting a loss of 1 cent a share on sales of $46.7 million. Vignette expects to report full third-quarter earnings on Oct. 19. Shares traded down 21 cents to $1.16.

Advanced Micro Devices

(AMD) - Get Report

fell 0.2% after the company warned that third-quarter sales would fall below expectations. The semiconductor maker now expects to post sales that are below second-quarter results. During the second quarter AMD posted sales of $1.26 billion. Previously, AMD forecast an increase in sequential sales. Analysts had been expecting sales of $1.34 billion. AMD will report its third-quarter earnings results on Oct. 7. Shares traded down 2 cents to $13.68.
