posted increases in both May same-store sales and total sales Wednesday, helped in part by strong pharmacy business.

The company said May same-store sales increased 8.5%, while total store sales were up 12.8% to $3.18 billion.

Total pharmacy sales jumped 14%, while same-store pharmacy sales increased 10.5% in May. Prescriptions filled at comparable stores rose 2.9%.

Same-store sales on a front-end basis increased 5.3% in May, the company said.

Walgreen operated 4,414 stores at the end of May, compared with 4,050 last year.

Shares of the company were lately down 40 cents, or 1.1%, at $34.79.
