Shares of

Oxford Industries

(OXM) - Get Report

were among the

NYSE's

winners Thursday, rising 11.3% after the company said its fourth-quarter earnings would top forecasts.

The clothing retailer now expects fourth-quarter earnings to meet or slightly exceed the top end of its previously issued guidance of $1 to $1.10 a share. Analysts polled by Thomson First Call had been expecting earnings of $1.06 a share.

Looking ahead, Oxford forecast first-quarter earnings of 55 cents to 60 cents a share on sales of $325 million to $335 million. Analysts are expecting earnings of 51 cents a share on sales of $293.7 million. The upbeat outlook was attributed to continued strength in the company's Tommy Bahama and Ben Sherman brands. Shares traded up $4.09 to $40.38.

Steel Dynamics

(STLD) - Get Report

fell 2.1% after the company slashed its second-quarter earnings forecast. The steel company now expects earnings of $1.10 to $1.15 a share, down from earlier guidance of $1.35 to $1.40 a share. Analysts had been expecting earnings of $1.35 a share. Steel Dynamics blamed the lower outlook on continued soft demand and an unforeseen drop in steel scrap prices for delivery in May and June.

Looking ahead, the company said that falling scrap prices would favorably impact its production costs during the third quarter -- when lower scrap inventories are consumed -- potentially improving its profit margins. For all of 2005, the company still expects its earnings to match those of 2004, which came in at $5.27 a share. Analysts are expecting 2005 earnings of $5.06 a share. Shares traded down 57 cents to $26.94.

Shares of

Saucony

( SCNYB) rose 17.4% after the shoe maker agreed to be acquired by

Stride Rite

( SRR) for roughly $170 million in cash. Saucony shareholders will receive $23 a share in cash for each share they hold, representing a premium of 19% over Wednesday's closing price of $19.29. On a combined basis, the two companies in 2004 would have generated about $725 million in sales. Before one-time costs, the deal is expected to be accretive to Stride Rite's 2006 earnings and cash flow. Finally, the deal is expected to close during the summer of 2005. Shares traded up $3.36 to $22.65.
