The maker of air compressors earned $14.7 million, or 61 cents a share, on sales of $250.3 million. Analysts polled by Thomson First Call were expecting earnings of 52 cents a share. A year ago the company earned $8.3 million, or 41 cents a share, on sales of $161.3 million.

Looking ahead, Gardner Denver expects third-quarter earnings of 46 cents to 56 cents a share. Analysts are expecting earnings of 47 cents a share. For the full year, Gardner now expects earnings of $2.20 to $2.40 a share, up from previous guidance of $2 to $2.16 a share. Analysts are expecting earnings of $2.17 a share. Shares were trading up $5.62 to $41.35.

Analysts were expecting earnings of 45 cents a share on sales of $150.7 million. A year ago the company earned $22.3 million, or 44 cents a share, on sales of $131.4 million. Plantronics said that sales were at the low end of its own guidance because of a shortfall in its office and contact center products. Looking ahead, Plantronics expects second-quarter sales of $160 million to $165 million, up 23% to 27% compared to a year ago. Analysts are expecting sales of $155.6 million. Shares were trading down $3.21 to $34.79.

Analysts were expecting earnings of $1.12 a share. A year ago the company earned $192 million, or $1.10 a share, on net interest income of $448 million. Shares were trading up $2.79 to $62.86.

Martin Marietta Materials

The company now expects earnings of $1.27 to $1.30 a share, up from previous guidance of 95 cents to $1.10 a share. Analysts had been expecting earnings of $1.09 a share. During last year's second quarter, the company earned 92 cents a share. Martin Marietta said the revised guidance was due to strong volume growth, a better pricing environment and cost control in the company's aggregates business.
