The company earned $1.6 million, or 5 cents a share, on sales of $100.1 million. Excluding items, Veeco would have earned $4.2 million, or 14 cents a share. Analysts polled by Thomson First Call were expecting earnings of 12 cents a share, before items, on sales of $103.8 million. A year ago, the company reported a loss of $2.2 million, or 7 cents a share, on sales of $97.4 million. Excluding items, the company would have reported a smaller loss of $649,000, or 2 cents a share, a year ago.

Looking ahead, Veeco forecast fourth-quarter adjusted earnings of 13 cents to 17 cents a share on sales of $100 million to $105 million. The projection is below analysts' expectation for earnings of 20 cents a share on sales of $109.2 million. Shares were trading down $1.68 to $15.39.

fell 7% after the company posted third-quarter results that missed expectations. The machinery maker earned $30.9 million, or 44 cents a share, on sales of $176.9 million. Analysts projected earnings of 50 cents a share on sales of $186.3 million. A year ago the company earned $28.8 million, or 41 cents a share, on sales of $149.1 million. Shares were trading down $2.55 to $33.07.

rose 4% after the poultry company raised its fourth-quarter earnings forecast. The company now expects earnings of $1.07 to $1.12 a share, up from a previous guidance of 90 cents to $1 a share. Analysts had been expecting earnings of 99 cents a share. Pilgrim's Pride attributed the outlook to better-than-expected results at its U.S. and Mexico chicken operations. Shares were trading up $1.30 to $35.39.

PetMed Express

rose 8% after the pet-medicine pharmacy posted second-quarter results that topped forecasts. The company earned $2.7 million, or 11 cents a share, on sales of $38.7 million. Analysts had forecast earnings of 10 cents a share on sales of $32.8 million. A year earlier, the company earned $1.8 million, or 8 cents a share, on sales of $28.8 million. During the most recent period, PetMed Express added 208,000 new customers. In the year-earlier period, the company added 154,000 new customers. Shares were trading up 84 cents to $10.89.

rose 13% after the transportation company posted better-than-expected third-quarter results. The company earned $40.6 million, or $1.59 a share, on sales of $489.9 million. Excluding a gain of $9.8 million, or 38 cents a share, Arkansas Best would have earned $30.8 million, or $1.21 a share. Analysts projected earnings of $1.10 a share on sales of $485.2 million. A year earlier, the company earned $27.4 million, or $1.07 a share, on sales of $461.9 million. "The improvement in ABF's third quarter operating ratio was accomplished because of a combination of good pricing and consistent cost controls," the company said. Shares were trading up $4.26 to $37.85.
