Shares of

Claire's Stores

( CLE) were among the

NYSE's

losers Thursday, falling 15.7% after the company posted third-quarter results that missed analysts' expectations and warned that fourth-quarter earnings would fall below expectations as well.

The specialty retailer earned 27 cents a share during the third quarter on sales of $296.7 million. Analysts surveyed by Thomson First Call were expecting earnings of 29 cents a share on sales of $297.3 million. Looking ahead, the company forecast fourth-quarter earnings of 61 cents to 66 cents a share on sales of $396 million to $405 million. Previously, the company forecast earnings of 70 cents to 72 cents a share on sales of $412 million to $414 million. Analysts had been expecting earnings of 71 cents a share on sales of $410.8 million. Claire's said business during the first few weeks of November has not met the company's expectations. It also reported that anecdotal evidence suggests that holiday shopping will start later this year than in 2003. Shares traded down $4.19 to $22.45.

Despite issuing a warning that first-quarter earnings would come in below Wall Street expectations, shares of

Multimedia Games

(MGAM)

traded up 5.4% Thursday. The maker of electronic gambling machines issued the warning after it turned in fourth-quarter earnings that beat expectations by a penny. During the fourth quarter Multimedia Games earned 24 cents a share on sales of $42.7 million. Analysts were expecting earnings of 23 cents a share. Looking ahead, the company forecast a first-quarter profit of 16 cents to 17 cents a share. Analysts had been expecting earnings of 25 cents a share. A year ago, the company earned 24 cents a share. Shares traded up 67 cents to $13.14.

Shares of

Stein Mart

fell 12.1% after the company posted in-line third-quarter earnings results but warned that fourth-quarter earnings would fall below expectations. The retailer posted a loss of 5 cents a share on sales of $330.4 million. Analysts were expecting a loss of 5 cents a share on sales of $330.8 million. Looking ahead, the company forecast fourth-quarter earnings of 40 cents to 43 cents a share. Analysts had been expecting earnings of 44 cents a share. Shares traded down $2.22 to $16.15.

Nordic American Tanker Shipping

(NAT) - Get Report

fell 3.5% after the company said it would sell 2.7 million common shares at $38.75 a share in a follow-on offering. The price represents a 3.2% discount to Nordic's closing price of $40.05 on Wednesday. Nordic said it would use proceeds from the offering to repay debt and to finance a recent tanker acquisition. Shares traded down $1.40 to $38.65.

Shares of

Genesco

rose 9.8% after the shoe retailer posted third-quarter earnings and sales above expectations and raised its full-year outlook. Excluding items, the company earned 57 cents a share on sales of $288 million. Analysts were expecting earnings of 47 cents a share on sales of $283.2 million. Looking ahead, Genesco raised its fiscal full-year earnings forecast to about $2.09 a share on sales of $1.1 billion. The earnings forecast excludes charges of 7 cents to 8 cents a share, attributable to a planned closing of Jarman and other underperforming stores. Analysts had been expecting earnings of $1.97 a share on sales of $1.1 billion. Shares traded up $2.61 to $29.36.
