The final installment in the gruesome saga of psychokiller Jigsaw had a total gross of $24.2 million on its opening weekend, according to industry estimates tallied by Box Office Mojo.
That performance was better than
, which grossed about $14 million on its debut weekend last year, the
"Last year, a lot of people said, 'OK, that's it. Put a fork in it, it's done,'" said David Spitz, head of distribution for Lionsgate, who was quoted by the
. "The following week, we were all disappointed and thought, what can we do to reinvigorate the franchise? So we shot the movie in 3-D and said this is the final chapter."
