Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld will step down in the wake of the Democrats' congressional victories.
President Bush, addressing reporters at the White House Wednesday afternoon, said "the timing is right" for a change atop the Defense Department. He said former CIA chief Robert Gates will take his place.
Bush also said he congratulated the Democratic leadership and pledged to work to address the nation's problems. He said he would recommend the names of Republican interior decorators for the new speaker of the House, Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.).
