Raytheon Optical Systems, which is based in Danbury, Conn., produces large optical and sensor systems, precision optics, reconnaissance systems and laser warning systems for military and civil space programs. The unit employs about 700 people and reported sales of $152 million in 1999.

Although terms of the deal weren't disclosed, Raytheon said the income from the sale would be used to reduce some of its debt.
