Qualcomm (QCOM) - Get Report on Tuesday announced that Qualcomm Technologies, a subsidiary of the semiconductor giant, has successfully achieved a 5G data connection on 5G modem chipset for mobile devices.

The accomplishment makes Qualcomm the first to bring ultrafast 5G wireless technology to the market.

"The Qualcomm Snapdragon X50 5G modem chipset delivered gigabit speeds and a data connection in the 28GHz mmWave radio frequency band, driving a new generation of cellular technology forward while accelerating the delivery of 5G NR enabled mobile devices to consumers," the company stated.

Those speeds make it several times faster than the 4G LTE wireless networks that are used in current smartphones. The San Diego-based chipmaker also said commercial launches of 5G smartphones and networks would commence in the first half of 2019.

"Achieving the world's first announced 5G data connection with the Snapdragon X50 5G modem chipset on 28GHz mmWave spectrum is truly a testament to Qualcomm Technologies' leadership in 5G and extensive expertise in mobile connectivity," said Cristiano Amon, executive VP, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. and president, QCT.

Shares of Qualcomm were lower in mid-morning trading on Tuesday.
