Lackluster trading in DRAM prevailed overnight, according to

Fechtor Detwiler

, an investment firm that tracks DRAM prices. Spot prices for 128 Megabit SDRAM hit a fresh new low, coming in at $5.30, down a nickel. Prices were stable overnight for 64Mb, coming in unchanged at $2.60.

But Fechtor Detwiler said this morning that "module manufacturers report that inventory levels for 64Mb chips available to spot in Asia are shrinking as many makers are changing their focus to 128Mb chip-based modules." As 2001 progresses, 64Mb spot prices will essentially become irrelevant, as 128Mb SDRAM will be the chips that investors will want to keep an eye on. (Spot prices are prices at which memory chips are sold for immediate delivery.)
